Lyme Bay, 1867. The young Charles Smithson has gone to visit his fiancee. Driven by his interest in paleontology, he goes on long excursions into the woods in search of fossils. During one of these occasions, he meets Sarah Woos-roff, whom the locals call "the French lieutenant's woman", due to the affair she once had with a sailor that later abandoned her. A passionate love is born between them that will violently clash.
